Overview
The big bad of the story. An outlier amongst the other gods, the Sea Devil initially had no apparent abilities or even much real strength, but discovered it was capable of manipulating living creatures by taking over their minds and leeching off their own power. The stronger the being, the more energy the Sea Devil can sap - but more powerful hosts can also be more difficult for the Sea Devil to get under control. Rather than create life from scratch, it uses others to reshape life as it sees fit, even toying with entire nations until it gets bored and moves on. If the Sea Devil disguises its intentions well enough, it can be nearly impossible to detect its presence in a person. If the Sea Devil works its way up the food chain, it can sometimes get strong enough to possess other gods.
Sea Devil's strategy:
- Finds a strong host body, uses it to achieve its goals, and moves to another island to repeat the process
- Master of tactics and waiting patiently for a really, really long time
The Sea Devil arrived on the island expecting it to be another routine stop on its path, but that changed when it sensed the power of THREE gods throughout the island (nature, lava, clay). It considered the island a good pit stop and vowed to make quick work of it.
Unfortunately for it, the nature spirit was able to partially resist the Sea Devil’s control, and flung the two of them down the volcano in an act of sacrifice. The Sea Devil was able to just barely survive in a dormant state, leeching off the nature spirit’s power for hundreds of years until a new powerful host stumbled upon the island. (Your captain)
History
At the beginning of time, before being set loose on the world, the gods spent a short time in a “lobby” of sorts where they got to do an extended meet-and-greet with each other. The Sea Devil’s outlook on life and controlling nature didn’t really sit well with most of the other gods, who shunned him for his methods. Many of them gave him affectionate nicknames such as “freak” and “idiot”. He got beat up a lot.

Notes + personality
A real big bastard prankster character who finds great joy in messing with people. Far goofier than the rest of the gods you see and expresses a lot more emotion than them. Evil to an obnoxious degree - someone you can’t help but love despite being comically evil. Loves winning.
Inspirations
- Aku from Samurai Jack
- Double King from that Felix Colgrave animation
Reference images
- Far less intimidating looking than the other gods - a lot goofier in appearance
- Like the initial sprite above, ideally wouldn’t have much of a body - able to float around and possess people more easily - more like a weird, fluid blob of evil
- Not visible when it is possessing a person, so glimpses of it are rare - the reveal of its look when it finally leaves a host body could be played for gags
- At one point the head/blob may be paired with a ripped muscular body
- Very weak / pathetic looking in its normal form
- Stupid fish-ball head? Fish-inspired design would be more accurate. jellyfish?
